Community Forestry: A New Era of Sustainable Forest Management
Community forestry is a approach to forest management that emphasizes the role of local communities in the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources.
Overview
Community forestry is a approach to forest management that emphasizes the role of local communities in the conservation and sustainable use of forest resources. This approach has gained significant attention in recent years due to its potential to promote sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), community forestry initiatives have been successful in countries such as Nepal, where over 20,000 community forest user groups manage more than 1.8 million hectares of forest land. However, community forestry also faces challenges such as limited access to finance, lack of technical capacity, and conflicting policies. Despite these challenges, community forestry has the potential to become a game-changer in the forestry sector, with the potential to sequester up to 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. As the world moves towards a more sustainable and equitable future, community forestry is likely to play an increasingly important role in the years to come, with the Global Forest Restoration Bond aiming to restore 350 million hectares of degraded forests by 2030.
