Overview
Ecosystem services are the numerous benefits that humans derive from ecosystems, including pollination, clean air and water, decomposition of wastes, and flood control. These services are vital for human well-being, providing direct and indirect benefits from nature, such as food, climate regulation, and recreation. The concept of ecosystem services was popularized by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) initiative by the United Nations, which grouped these services into four broad categories: provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural services. With the increasing recognition of the importance of ecosystem services, efforts are being made to conserve and sustainably manage ecosystems to maintain these essential services. For instance, the work of ecological-restoration experts has highlighted the need for restoration of degraded ecosystems to maintain ecosystem services. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has also launched initiatives to promote the conservation of ecosystem services.
