The European Union (EU) is a unique economic and political partnership of 27 European countries, established in 1993 by the Maastricht Treaty. With a combined population of over 447 million people and a GDP of over $18 trillion, the EU is a significant global player. The EU's precursor, the European Economic Community (EEC), was formed in 1957 with six founding members: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Today, the EU operates through a system of supranational and intergovernmental decision-making, with institutions such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the Council of the European Union. Despite its achievements, the EU faces numerous challenges, including Brexit, migration, and economic inequality. As the EU continues to evolve, it must balance the interests of its member states while addressing global issues like climate change and economic competitiveness.
