Overview
Climate change, driven by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, is having a profound impact on the planet. According to NASA, the past four years have been the hottest on record, with 2020 being the hottest year ever recorded, with a global average temperature of 1.02°C above the 1961-1990 average. The consequences are far-reaching, from more frequent and intense natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, and droughts, to rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and altered ecosystems. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that between 2030 and 2050, climate change will cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year, mainly due to malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress. The economic impact is also significant, with a study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggesting that climate change could reduce global GDP by 7% by 2100. As the world struggles to mitigate and adapt to climate change, it's clear that the impact will be felt for generations to come, with the IPCC warning that in order to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, global CO2 emissions need to reach net zero by 2050.
