Overview

Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate healthcare for specific clinical circumstances. They have been a cornerstone of modern medicine since the 1980s, with the first guidelines developed by the US National Institutes of Health. The Institute of Medicine (now known as the National Academy of Medicine) has played a pivotal role in shaping the methodology and standards for CPGs. However, CPGs are not without controversy, with debates surrounding their potential to stifle innovation, the influence of pharmaceutical companies, and the challenges of keeping them up-to-date. The Guidelines International Network (G-I-N) has over 100 member organizations from more than 40 countries, highlighting the global relevance and collaboration in this field. As of 2022, there were over 3,700 clinical guidelines registered on the G-I-N website, underscoring the vast scope and complexity of this topic. The future of CPGs will likely involve more personalized and technology-driven approaches, potentially leveraging artificial intelligence to tailor guidelines to individual patient needs.
